Column: Dunfee’s Dose – WWE Shaming Us With Sheamus - Posted by Chris Dunfee on December 16th, 2009

As I wrote in my last column, the night after Sheamus won the #1 contendership for the WWE Championship, I felt it was one of the lowest moments in not just WWE history but major pro wrestling history.

Sure, you had some pretty low things happen including David Arquette’s title run and Mae Young giving birth to a hand but at least we knew it was done for a stupid reason or some sort of gimmick to entertainment. The thing about Sheamus, WWE is dead serious about what they just did.

Leading up to Sheamus being called up to the WWE main roster, there was a lot of hype from some of my friends about how good this guy is and how much potential he has. I started to believe some of the hype myself because I trust the opinions of a lot of people I talk to in wrestling circles.

One day, scrolling through a site, looking for PSDs to put on a banner, I came across some Indy PSDs of Sheamus and it scared the hell out of me. The guy looked nothing like I had imagined but maybe once I seen the guy on the TV, with perhaps a gimmick makeover and seeing his work, I thought I may grow to like him.

Boy was I wrong. I was there watching live as Sheamus made his debut in “The Land Of Extreme” and my draw dropped to the floor. This guy came out looking as white as a ghost, pretty thin for a man his weight, the worst mug I have ever seen in wrestling, and spikey red hair that looked like he was just electrocuted. The thing that really stood out to me was this stupid walk he had to the ring. Combine all this, I was EXTREMELY disappointed.

I don’t care what anyone says, ring work is good and all, but it never made Lance Storm or D-Lo Brown a superstar and nothing could save this god awful of a look if they were dead set on making this guy a face of the company for the future.

Sheamus’s first night on ECW, he was not booked as a heel or face, he appeared to be more of a face in my opinion and the crowd turned on him instantly. I never heard so many boos for someone who had never made an appearance of any sort in WWE.

After a series of squash matches and no real opportunity to flash this supposed “great” ring work. Soon afterward, he had a nice old school feud with Goldust but it really wasn’t anything to get crazy over with his ring work. After the feud, he had a shortlived rivalry with Shelton Benjamin, and even with a guy as talented as Benjamin, Sheamus didn’t really seperate himself and flash this “great” potential he supposedly has.

Soon after, he was shockingly moved to RAW, where they are stacked at the top with established stars and young up and coming mid carders and it seemed pretty stacked and had no room for someone like Sheamus. After more squash matches and an attack on Jerry “The King” Lawler, Sheamus was given a spot on an all heel team at the Survivor Series where he won the match for his team.

The following night, as many of you know, Sheamus won a battle royal and crowned the #1 contender.

I don’t think I had ever been as upset or disappointed in all my years of viewing pro wrestling as I was after seeing him clothesline Kofi Kingston over the top rope to become the #1 contender and it was for all the wrong reasons.

They had just given a guy that had the worst look in the company, no credibility inside the squared circle, horrible mic skills, god awful charisma, and a VERY limited ceiling a WWE Championship title shot.

I sat and asked myself, simply….why? How could a guy so awful with such limited potential who has showed nothing rise to the top so fast?

As it comes to no one’s surprise, reports began surfacing that Sheamus is one of “HHH’s boys” and we all know what that will do for your career when your buddy is nailing the boss’s daughter. Just ask Randy Orton, Batista, and Drew McIntyre.

The thing that makes this even worse and even more disgusting are all the worthy guys who are over with the crowd, have a proven track record, and have a lot of growth potential are being buried at the moment.

John Morrison is drawing comparisons as the next Shawn Michaels. He has a great look and one of the best bodies in the WWE. He is one of the most over faces in the company. He is a multi-time Intercontinental, Tag Team, and ECW Champion and has established himself after constant improvement and growth since his days with M’N'M. Morrison is one of the most exciting in ring stars in the company and continously is never given the greenlight. What makes Sheamus more worthy than Morrison?

Montel Vontavious Porter has been one of the most successful stars to not win a World Championship since entering the WWE. MVP’s look is very good and his mic skills are top notch. Montel has shown an incredible ability to be over as either a heel or face. MVP is a multi-time US and Tag Team champion. Every opportunity he has gotten to show off his in-ring ability, he has showed what he is capable of, most notably his recent encounter with Randy Orton earlier this year and his incredible series of matches with the late Chris Benoit. What makes Sheamus more worthy than MVP?

Jack Swagger may be one of the best athletes in the WWE. His athleticism for such a big guy and his amateur wrestling background reminds many of Brock Lesnar. Swagger has proven himself as an over heel on ECW, where he was ECW Champion and feuded with Christian. Swagger has shown a ton of potential inside the squared circle and will do nothing but improve. He may have the highest upside in the company. What makes Sheamus more worthy than Swagger?

I could go on and on with a ton of guys who share similiar qualities like Carlito Colon, Kofi Kingston, Ted DiBiase Jr., and Cody Rhodes. All these guys are proven at some level whether it be with the WWE audience in the ring, on the mic, or just overall overness. Again, for all Sheamus supporters, why is this guy more worthy than all these guys who are proven and have A LOT more potential? Outside of his man affair with HHH, I am completely baffled.

My point was proven when he got ZERO crowd reaction after winning the battle royal, ZERO crowd reaction after winning the WWE title, and last night when Sheamus came to the podium and accepted the Slammy for the Biggest Joke Of The Year….I mean Breakout Performer.

The crowd, a crowd that is so hostile against Cena, tore this guy apart when he came out. The crowd booed the hell out of him and absolutely lit into the guy. This folks, was not heel heat, he is just not over. When the What chants are broken out during a promo, people absolutely don’t give a shit about what you have to say.

His mic skills might work to viewers outside of the United States and those more specifically in Ireland but that shit does not work here. It simply does not work and will never get over.

The thing about Sheamus, there is no changing or altering his gimmick so he can be repackaged and be successful in the future. His STRONG Irish heritage and look will just not get over here in the states no matter what type of look you give him.

WWE’s initial plan was to bring up Sheamus to partner with Finlay against The Hart Dynasy which would work and help Sheamus get over in some sort of fashion in a tag team, not as a legit World Champion contender.

Many want to compare his rise to the top to Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg, which is almost as funny as Sheamus looks. Lesnar and Goldberg both ESTABLISHED themselves and were OVER with the crowd. They looked like big dominate mean dudes who would destroy anyone. Sheamus is about as big as everyone else and looks like a fucking idiot. People didn’t laugh or make fun of Lesnar/Goldberg’s appearance. People thought they looked like champions and the face of a company.

This is not a guy that is going to get over as the face of your company, plain and simple, so just kill this now Vince or HHH or you will regret this if TNA has a clue.

All I ask WWE, if your going to give us change at the top, give it to someone WORTHY, PROVEN, and has POTENTIAL.

That is all for now, until I get pissed off again and have to do this. Take care and happy holidays everyone.

big woop de feckin doo dah
WWE’s decision, if they seen something in Sheamus they have decided to push him. That’s a main problem with about 95% of the IWC, all that 95% think that they could book a WWE show better than the creative, yet if a paper and a pen was put in front of them and they were told they had an hour to write up something fresh new and interesting they couldnt

The thing is I hate when people say its because he is one of HHH’s boys, Sheamus is working his ASS off whether we like it or not, he’s commited to the business, he was doing this shit also of showing up to cards he had no part of back in the Irish Indy Scene.

I think if people took time out and watched Sheamus on DailyMotion, Youtube or another one of the good video websites, they would realise the potential this guy has.

Here’s the thing. This is’nt Cena vs. Edge in “The Greatest Rivalry of all time” or Cena vs. Orton in “You beat me so I need to beat you” or Triple H vs. Orton in “Payback for Evolution”. This is something new. Something we haven’t seen before. It’s fresh and to me it’s been good so far. Do Morrison, Matt Hardy, Christian, Shelton Benjamin, Jack Swagger, and others deserve it more? Yes. But please quit complaining because you finally got what you’ve been asking for all these years.
